Determination: A Universal Ingredient For Success

Lucky had gotten out of his fenced in area for at least the umpteenth time and proudly sprawled himself upon the deck leading out of the house. I had made at least the same number of half hearted attempts to foil his escape route and I failed each and every time. As he lay there happily wagging his tail, he slowly looked up at me with a, “I know I’m not suppose to be out... but,” look on his face.

That’s when this “doggie determination rule” struck me. Lucky’s actions made me realize that I was on to something much bigger than that. There was something to this metaphor much bigger than the doggie style of determination. What Lucky possesses goes much deeper than simply doggie mentality. I came to the realization that determination is universal. It relates and can be observed in any and all forms of nature. Now granted it is brought about by many reactive and non-reactive reasons. In Lucky’s case he kept the mental image of what it was like to be allowed to lounge on the deck and didn’t like having to spend the night time hours and when we were away, contained in his area. Even though he has a nice large area that includes close access to us, it wasn’t enough. He developed a mental determination to have what he wanted and he went to all extremes and measures to have it.

It reminded me of a television commercial. You may have seen it. There’s this guy fishing from a pier and you see him look to his left in stunned disbelief at a younger man who must have at least 100 poles of all different sizes and styles, and a variety of tackle and bait to choose from surrounding him. The older man, inclined to ask, does just that and says something along the lines of, “What’cha going for pal?” The younger man immediately says, “I want it all.” You see, this individual, a lot like Lucky the dog, had a mental determination to have it all. He was bound and determined to achieve this goal and he was willing to go to extremes to get it. We witness the evidence of universal determination all the time. In nature ?in the form of wind water and fire. I see it when I faithfully battle the crab grass from growing through the driveway or when I destroy a wasp nest only to witness its return.

And it’s witnessed daily in human nature in a magnitude of ways. It’s the reality of this action called determination that propels us as humans to excel in ways that are always different yet sometimes all so determinable. And, it’s determination at different levels that separates the high achievers from the mediocre ones all the way down to the non-achievers. The following excerpt from a little yet very powerful book called, The Magic Of Believing - Claude M. Bristol, completely ties in with this determination factor.

Bristol writes, “All the great forward movements, as a matter of fact, I might say, all the great things in this world, have been done by men and women who were dreamers and believers in their dreams coming true. They could not have accomplished things otherwise. It’s like the old story about climbing to the top of the mountain in search of that indefinable something. It makes no difference from which side the approach is made, those who steadfastly climb reach the top, and so it is with this matter of believing. It isn’t so much what the real or imaginary object of our belief may be, it’s the belief and following through that makes the thing possible.”

Belief coupled with determination should then be classified as a key ingredient for success. My thoughts and views toward this connection relates to success in business as well as life in general. If you plan on being successful at anything, no matter what the level of importance or monetary value, always include the universal ingredient ? determination, and you will see your cause to the end with a favorable outcome.
